Letters to Jessica

This is one of my very favorite books.

We homeschool. Part of the reason is because the schools don't teach what we want our children to learn. But an even bigger reason is because we don't want our children to learn what the schools do teach.

I believe most people live in a fantasy world. Robert Bissett cuts through the fantasy better than most anyone I've ever read. He does it by telling children's stories, designed for children beginning at about 7 years old. Robert explains:

"Explaining our predicament to someone who's programming is complete has proven very difficult. Most are content to live in the fantasy world that has developed over the years.

Adventures in Legal Land

You trust us to tell it like it is, so here goes: I wish this book were better organized, and that the author didn't repeat himself quite so much.

Having said that, this is the best book about courtroom procedure I've read in years.

We get a lot of email from readers with legal troubles, ranging from minor traffic issues, to the much-more-serious. After reading Adventures in Legal Land I find myself recommending this book in nearly every reply I send. We decided this is a book every reader of our website should have, so it only makes sense to include it in our catalog.

Stevens has a razor sharp ability cut to through all the smoke and mirrors used by the courts, and zero in point-blank on the real issues. In the Author's own words:

"Change your perception for a moment. Look at the situation, such as a traffic stop, and imagine it without the legal opinions and costumes. Just look at the actions and what is really happening. This is similar to the story of Alice in Wonderland when Alice realized the so-called 'queen' was just a playing card. Alice just stopped accepting the 'mental conception' that a playing card was a 'queen' and the 'queen' lost her power over Alice."

Limitations on Social Security Number disclosure.

The SSN was never intended to be a national I.D. number, but these days that is exactly what it has become. With identity theft running rampant, it is more important than ever to never disclose this number to anyone, unless absolutely necessary.

Have you ever been told, "We must have your Social Security number, or we can't (whatever)?" I've heard it from banks, video rental stores, hospitals, you name it. Once while I was checking into a Holiday Inn, the desk clerk told me about a preferred members club I could join for free, and begin immediately getting a 20% discount on room rates. The catch? I had to write my SSN on the application.

I've been using a variation of this Notice for almost ten years. It explains to the average desk clerk or bureaucrat why it is illegal for them to demand your SSN in exchange for doing business with you. It quotes the Privacy Act, which mandates a minimum $1000 fine for violations, and also quotes from several interesting and pertinent court cases.

The Notice is very intimidating, and thus quite useful. I can't remember where I got the original, but I've re-written it to make it more effective. I've never sued for the thousand bucks, and don't know how easy that would be. But in my experience there are very few people who want to take the chance. The clerk in the above example still wouldn't let me join the club, but he gave me the 20% discount and the continental breakfast.
